Introduction

This project started when I realized how much I spent on groceries and how much I lost on groceries that went bad and had to be tossed. Food is the third-largest living expense (after housing and transportation) for the average American family (Andrews, 2020). For me, I wasted 5-15% of the groceries I bought. So, this app will need to change this bad habit and save me more money. We must use all the groceries we buy in order to save our money and the world. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, One-third of greenhouse emissions globally come from agriculture, and 30% of the food we produce is wasted – about 1.8 billion tonnes of it a year.

There are many ways to prolong your groceries, but my goal for this app was to bring the waste down to zero. Therefore, the only way to do this was to use all the groceries effortlessly and creatively. This app will help the users track what they have and what they can make before the groceries go bad.

Surveys &

Interviews

I surveyed 45 potential users in combination with 3 interviews from my network to collect quantitative and qualitative data to verify and expose what users expect to have in Groze. The target audience was home cooks between the ages of 20-45 who want to prevent the waste on groceries and save more money.

From my research, I found that the users spend about $320 per person a month on groceries. But, vegetables, fruits, bread, and meats tend to go bad before being used. Most respondents answered that they did not know what to make from what they had. Some users said they could have used the tossed ingredients to make tons of food. The user wants to be able to utilize what they have at home to create different dishes food and avoid wasting habits.

I also learned that the users went to a grocery store once every two weeks and anytime they needed something for a recipe. Some of the users used a grocery shopping app to get groceries delivered to their doors.

At this point, I refined some core features that will solve a problem and improve the users' lives.

I learned that

we are hurting our world just by doing little things wrong, and we can start doing the right things to protect it now. Being a UX/UI design is very challenging because it takes time and effort to understand a problem and find the best solution without getting your thoughts over the users'. Groze will be a tool to bring grocery-waste to zero. This will help users save tons of money on groceries and reduce waste that is responsible for greenhouse gas emissions.
